1. Vitamin C — Your Immune Shield
Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants your body needs. It helps your immune system fight off infections — from the common cold to more serious tropical illnesses. In a country where infectious diseases are common, keeping your immune system strong is essential.
Vitamin C also helps your body absorb iron (see below), heals wounds faster, and protects your skin from damage. Adults need at least 75–90mg per day.
2. Vitamin D — Not Just From Sunshine
Many Liberians assume they get enough Vitamin D because of the sunshine — but research shows that most people in West Africa are still deficient. This is because much of the time spent outdoors is in shade, and skin tone affects how much Vitamin D your body produces.
Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, a healthy immune system, and good mood. Low Vitamin D has been linked to fatigue, bone pain, and increased risk of infections.
3. Iron — Fighting Anaemia
Anaemia (low iron in the blood) is extremely common in Liberia, especially among women, pregnant mothers, and young children. Iron is what your red blood cells need to carry oxygen around your body. When you are low on iron, you feel constantly tired, weak, and short of breath.
Women lose iron every month through menstruation. Pregnant women need significantly more. Parasitic infections like malaria and hookworm also deplete iron levels.
4. Folic Acid — Critical for Women
Folic Acid (Vitamin B9) is essential for every woman of childbearing age, especially during the first three months of pregnancy. It prevents serious birth defects that affect the baby's brain and spine.
Even if you are not pregnant, folic acid helps your body produce healthy red blood cells and supports brain function. It works closely with iron to prevent anaemia.
5. Zinc — Healing and Immunity
Zinc is involved in over 300 processes in the body, yet many Liberians do not get enough from their diet. It supports your immune system, helps wounds heal faster, improves skin health, and is especially important for children's growth and development.
Zinc deficiency is common in areas where the diet is heavy in plant foods and light on meat. Signs include slow wound healing, frequent infections, loss of taste or smell, and poor growth in children.
How to Take Vitamins Safely
- Take vitamins with food — this improves absorption and reduces stomach upset
- Do not take more than the recommended dose thinking "more is better" — some vitamins are harmful in high doses
- If you are on medication for any condition, check with our pharmacist before starting supplements
- Store vitamins in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
